What is Dry Eye?

Definition – Dry Eye is a chronic condition defined as inadequate tear film caused by inadequate tear production, excess tear evaporation or abnormal tear film components.

Sufferers – It is estimated that between 10 and 14 million people are affected in the United States. It is highly prevalent in the elderly population. Dry Eye affects women 2 to 3 times more often than men and is more likely to be found in women who are post menopausal.

Risk Factors – include various disease states, environmental factors, life style habits and the taking of various medications.

Signs & Symptoms – eye discomfort, burning or scratchy feeling, grittiness, foreign body sensation, blurred vision, sensitivity to light and excessive tearing.
